Neff shoots 4-under on back nine to repeat at Illinois Women’s Open

By editor in Illinois Women's Open, Local golf, Women's golf on July 25, 2009

iwo-logo-use550ROMEOVILLE, IL — Starting in a three-way tie for the lead at 3-under, Michigan State junior Aimee Neff played an up-n-down even-par for her first nine and suddenly found herself three strokes down at the turn. Taking command of the lead was Akron pro Brittany Johnston, who registered a sizzling 3-under 33 going out. Playing in the same group, on the inward nine, Neff mounted a furious charge in an effort to defend her title at the Illinois Women’s Open state championship, outmatching Johnston 32-38 coming in for 68 and total 7-under 71-70-68-209 for a three-stroke victory.neff-2009

Neff (right) on the back nine at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville carded two birdies and an eagle 3 on the par-5 15th, which gave her the lead for good. Johnston struggled in with four bogeys against two pars, for 4-under 70-71-71-212. The third member of the lead group, Hailey Koschmann, an amateur from Lake Forest who stars for Illinois, struggled to an uncharacteristic 76 for 70-71-76-217, tied for third with two others.

Fourteen-year-old amateur Katherine Hepler of Downstate Lincoln — who starts high school in the fall – shot 71-75-71-217. Amateur Brooke Beeler of tiny Downstate Butler, the first round leader, finished 69-75-73-217.
Former Northwestern star Seul Ki Park of  Northbrook finished solo fifth with 72-71-75-218. One shot back were amateur Chelsea Harris of Normal (70-74-75-219) and touring pro Jessica Schneider of Elgin (73-71-75-219).

Defending champ Neff in 3-way tie for Illinois Women’s Open lead

By editor in Illinois Women's Open, Local golf, Women's golf on July 24, 2009

iwo-logo-use550ROMEOVILLE, IL — Carmel, IN native Aimee Neff played 18 holes of consistent golf and her 2-under 70 in the second round of the Illinois Women’s Open state championship moved her into position to successfully defend her title at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville with 3-under 141. She didn’t write down anything higher than a five.

But the Michigan State junior will have to outgun pro Brittany Johnston of Akron, OH, and Lake Forest amateur Hailey Koschmann, also at 141. Johnston played for Northwestern, Koschmann currently plays for Illinois.

Two strokes off the pace at 142 are Evanston pro Jennifer Hong (Northwestern) and Carmel, IN amateur Milena Savich, who plays for Michigan. At 143 is Northbrook pro Seul Ki Park (Northwestern), last year’s Low Pro. Glenview amateur Nora Lucas had the day’s low round, a 3-under 69.

il-open-2009-logoThis year’s edition of the Illinois Open Championship, July 27-29 at Hawthorn Woods Country Club, marks not only the 60th installment of the “state of championship of golf” but will also prove to be a test of endurance for two Illinois PGA Professionals who will be pulling double-duty.

Four-time champion Mike Small will be competing in the Colorado Open Championship July 23-26 at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver, Colo., where he finished tied for second after losing in a playoff in 2008. The State Championship of Golf, the 15th Illinois Women’s Open, returns to the upland links-style Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, on July 23-26.

The concept of an all-women’s state championship became reality as the Illinois Women’s Open made its debut in 1995. At that time, only two states had women’s opens. Illinois became the third.

The event mixing pros and amateurs has grown in stature since the first year, although it got off to a rocky start.

The first round of the inaugural year had to be wiped out because lightning and severe thunderstorms swept through the area. The championship was shortened to 36 holes. Read More…

Mike Small, the golf coach at the University of Illinois, edged Mark Sheftic and Steve Schneiter by a shot to win the PGA Professional National Championship Wednesday. Small, who also won the title in 2005, finished at 7-under 277 after a final-round 68 at Twin Warriors. He will play in August’s PGA Championship at Hazeltine National. His Illini team also won the Big Ten Championship for the first time since 1988.

SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. (July 1, 2009) – Forgive Mike Small if he wasn’t hanging on his cell phone Wednesday afternoon to mark the first day that college golf coaches can contact recruits. The 2009 Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year was playing hooky by winning a second PGA Professional National Championship.

    You’re off the hook, Coach.

The 43-year-old Small arrived at the showcase event for PGA Professionals with what he called a “so-so” game the past few months and a bad back that caused him fits the night before the opening round. Yet on Wednesday, he rallied on the back nine at Twin Warriors Golf Club, while those ahead of him on the leader board backed up.

Georgia’s Jean Reynolds wins Hammond Futures in tricky winds

By editor in Futures Tour, Local golf, Women's golf on June 28, 2009

horseshoe125x106HAMMOND, Ind., June 28 - Going into today’s final round of the $100,000 Horseshoe Casino Classic at Lost Marsh Golf Course, the talk was in order to win, you had to go low. The weather, however, had another idea. Gusty winds, at times reaching 30-plus mph, took over and players struggled, with no one scoring under par for the day. By round’s end, Jean Reynolds, of Newnan, Ga., shot 1-over-par and claimed the victory.

“I’m 100 percent glad to be done because the wind just kind of beats you down,” said Reynolds, a second-year professional who carded a final-round one-over-par score of 73 to finish with a total score of 213 (-3). “The course played completely different than it did for the past two days. I just had to remember not to get frustrated. Pars were good today.” FULL FIELD SCORES BELOW Read More…
