How Mistwood will set up for the Illinois Women’s Open

By editor in Amateur golf, Illinois Women's Open, Local events, Women's golf on July 23 2008

Tournament director Phil Kosin talks about the thought processes that go into the course setup at Mistwood for the Illinois Women’s Open.

He has long realized the potential for excitement gained by setting up driveable par-4s, many years before the PGA Tour and USGA figured it out (better late than never). He also loves risk and reward opportunities and forcing players to challenge themselves by constantly having to make decisions as they maneuver their ball through the 18 holes. He purposely sets up the two par-5s on the inward side so players can gamble for an eagle or birdie – or stumble and make an “other”. He tells players if they try to hit 12-14 drivers, they’ll get carried out on their shield. Read More…

Michelle Wie will join Hinsdale’s Rob Grube in PGA Tour event

By editor in Golf is a circus on July 22 2008

renotahoe139x72.jpgMichelle Wie, fresh off her DQ in Springfield at the State Farm Rail Classic, has accepted a sponsor’s exemption into the 2008 Legends Reno-Tahoe Open, where she’ll join her former Stanford classmate, Rob Grube of Hinsdale, also granted an exemption for the July 28-Aug. 3 PGA Tour event at the Montrêux G&CC.

It will be Wie’s 14th try against an all-male field.

What is she thinking?

Grube, who graduated from Stanford this spring, is a four-time NCAA All-American and the winner of five collegiate tournaments. In 2007, he finished third in the NCAA Championships, helping the Cardinal win their first national golf title since 1994. The year before, Grube was the Pac-10 Player of the Year and won the Illinois State Amateur. Read More…

Newman beats Chin 5&3 to win U.S. Amateur Public Links

By editor in Amateur golf, Tourney results, USGA on July 19 2008

usga-logo-200x79.jpgBy Peter Kowalski

Aurora, Colo. – Jack Newman, 20, of Des Moines, Iowa, defeated John Chin, 21, of Temecula, Calif., 5 and 3, in Saturday’s 36-hole final of the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at the 7,551-yard, par 71 Murphy Creek Golf Course.

“I’m sure it will settle in tomorrow when [the win] really hits,” said a tired, but happy Newman, who will probably receive an invitation to the 2009 Masters Tournament and is exempt for the 2008 U.S. Amateur. “But, right now it’s just taking it all in for what it’s worth.”

Newman, who had a 1-up lead entering the afternoon round after a back-and-forth morning round, knew he couldn’t relax against Chin, who was vying to become the fifth left-handed player to win a USGA championship and the first Californian to win the Amateur Public Links since Tim Hogarth (then of Van Nuys) won in 1996. Close to lead, Wie disqualified for not signing scorecard

By editor in Downstate golf, LPGA Tour on July 19 2008

state-farm-classic-logo150x123.jpgMaybe Michelle Wie really is snakebit.

Playing in the LPGA State Farm Classic at Panther Creek Country Club in downstate Springfield, it looked like the much-heralded 18-year-old finally was about to break through. In the event courtesy of a sponsor’s exemption, Wie looked like she finally had solved her swing ailments and was solid in second place after both Thursday’s and Friday’s rounds.

She seemed a cinch to cash a hefty paycheck if she could keep it going over the weekend. If she could finish in the first two spots ($255,000 to the winner, $155,252 for second place) she’d move into position on the money list where getting an automatic LPGA tour card for next year would be a done deal. This would be the week to accomplish that, seeing that the event had only two of the top 10 players on the money list entered. And that the course was wide-open and very driver-friendly. Read More…

Illinois Women’s Open July 23 qualifier pairings, starting times

By editor in Amateur golf, Illinois Women's Open, Local events, Women's golf on July 17 2008

iwo-logo185x51.jpgFor the first time in its 14-year history, the number of entries for the Illinois Women’s Open has exceeded the number of spots in the field. As dictated by the rules, the Tournament Committee will hold a qualifying round to determine the final field.

At the time of this writing 16 17 18 19 18 players will be competing for a minimum of eight nine spots in the 2008 Illinois Women’s Open field. If the committee receives any more withdrawals prior to the qualifier, those spots would also be made available through the qualifying round.

The qualifier will be held at Mistwood Golf Club Wednesday, July 23. The qualifier will consist of nine holes at stroke-play. If at the end of nine holes there is a tie to fill the final spots in the field, a sudden-death playoff will be held. Players failing to qualify will be ranked in the order of finish for the positions of alternate, and any ties will be broken in a sudden-death playoff.>>> Read More…

Illinois Women’s Open will hold first qualifier July 23

By editor in Amateur golf, Illinois Women's Open, Local events, Women's golf on July 17 2008

iwo-logo185x51.jpgIt’s a sign of the times, the rapid growth of women’s golf.

For the first time in its 14-year history, the Illinois Women’s Open State Championship of Golf has received more entries than the available spots in the field. So for the first time in its history, the IWO will hold a qualifier.

“Two years ago out of necessity we changed the format to sending players off both the first and 10th tees simultaneously,” said tournament director Phil Kosin. “It’s July in Chicago, and too many times in the past lightning and thunderstorms affected our ability to complete tournament rounds on the day they started. So we sat down with the folks at Mistwood Golf Club and decided the only solution to ensure we could get the entire field through each day was to do a crossover and start at 7 a.m.” Read More…

Schachner set to defend Illinois Women’s Open title next week

By editor in Amateur golf, Illinois Women's Open, Local events, Women's golf on July 16 2008

iwo-logo185x51.jpgThe State Championship of Golf, the 14th Illinois Women’s Open, returns to its home venue, Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, next week on July 24-26.

“It looks like once again we have most of the state’s premier women players competing, and this year we have a lot more Downstate players,” said Phil Kosin, tournament director and Chicagoland Golf publisher.

“Ever since we opened the event to eight states, we’re drawing a lot of collegiate players from outside Illinois. That’s really ramped-up the competition.”

Back to defend her title is Libertyville’s Nicole Schachner, who survived a state-record 10-hole playoff to defeat 2006 IWO champion Jenna Pearson of Wheaton. Read More…

Condé Nast pulls plug on Golf for Women magazine

By editor in Business news, Golf media, Women's golf on July 7 2008

Golf For Women magazine will cease publication with its July/August issue, it was announced today by Charles H. Townsend, President & CEO of Condé Nast Publications.

“We came to this decision because we feel the magazine will not support our long term business objectives,” Mr. Townsend said. “I would like to thank Susan Reed and Chris McLoughlin and the entire staff for their efforts throughout the years.  Golf For Women attracted a loyal readership and we were proud to publish it.”

“Will not support our long term business objectives” = corporatespeak for “we’re losing our butt financially”.
